Commander Rules Guide: Quick Start & FAQ

This is the MH3 deck that gives you access to the best counter spells, the biggest creatures and some of the best win you the game cards. After 2015’s Battle for Zendikar, blocks now consist of only two sets. Despite Wizards of the Coast still sanctioned Block Constructed event, no major events like Grand Prix or Pro Tour used that format since then, and has played the importance of the formats down. The format itself would be dropped in April 2018, when Block was no longer used in Standard sets. If you’re going to play with a new group, make sure you’re updated on what form of mulligan they’re using so that you know just how many times you can draw seven cards. It reminds me a lot of session 0 in Dungeons & Dragons games.

These decks offer a bang-for-your-buck type entry into the format and usually come with Commander staples like Sol Ring and Arcane Signet. Each release covers a variety of themes and play styles within each deck and is a solid choice in terms of content and value for new players. MTG Online has long offered both 1v1 and multiplayer Commander games in both casual and league formats. It offers a great alternative to paper Commander thanks to the affordability of buying singles on the platform.

If the majority of the group agrees, decks that rely on infinite combos won’t be allowed anymore. I used to have an EDH deck that used mass land destruction as a win condition. It basically consisted of playing an absurd amount of planeswalkers and enchantments. Once I had a reasonable board set, I’d play Jokulhaups and get rid of everything except for planeswalkers and enchantments. Immediately after that, my friends would simply concede and we’d start a new game. And after the match, everyone gets to talk about the decks, what they enjoyed most, what they found fun or boring about the game, and anything else that may improve their experience for the next game.

Can I Lose to Commander Damage From My Own Commander?

What is the difference between standard and Commander decks?

This simplicity is my most missed characteristic of the typical Constructed formats like the rotating Standard and eternal Modern. Not only do you have a more narrow range of cards but you also need to get up to four of each. Some draft formats are all about commons and uncommons, but MTG Foundations has plenty of exciting bomb rares to choose from. Trading card games have gone digital and are more accessible than ever before. If you fancy stepping away from premade decks, you can build them from scratch too.

Competitive Commander, often referred to as “cEDH,” is a unique breed of EDH that highlights decks that consistently win by combo-ing off as early as possible and killing everyone but yourself. We’ve also got a tier list of the best commanders, the most fun commanders, and a guide on how many lands you need to build a good deck. Various alternative rules can be used to govern the construction of decks. Some of these variants have become so popular that unsanctioned tournaments have taken place at various Magic tournaments and gaming-oriented conventions such as Gen Con.

Most groups have each player roll a die and whoever gets the highest number is either forced to go first or gets to choose if they want to start. Another important thing is that you can put your commander back in the command zone if it would be sent to the graveyard, to your hand, to your library, or into exile. And you can simply play it again the next chance you get once it’s there. Your commander determines the colors that you’re allowed to play in your deck. Make it easy on yourself and put your favorite playmat, dice, and deckbox together with your Commander deck so it’s one item, ready to pick up and play.

The Ultimate Guide to EDH: How to Play Commander

Ephara, God of the Polis provides card advantage if you’re flashing in your blink creatures on your opponent’s turns. The Starter Commander Deck Bundle is an excellent way to break into the format for a group of friends on a budget. For about $100, you get five unique decks to play around with and learn the format with.

But even then, you can only do this by having a legendary creature as your commander. The first thing to keep in mind is that your commander must be a legendary creature. One instance where this rule bends is in the case of certain planeswalkers that can be your commander, like Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath. Cards other than legendary creatures can’t be your commander. In the case of double-faced cards, the color identity for your deck is a combination of both faces if the front and back have different colors in their abilities or casting costs. A Valki, God of Lies / Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor deck has a color identity of black and red even if the front face of the card is mono-black.

Sanctioned Multiplayer

Both Mind Control– and Act of Treason-type effects work on commanders. In all multiplayer formats, the starting player gets to draw a card on turn 1. Every time you cast your commander, the next time you cast it costs an extra . If your commander has a converted mana cost of three, casting it a second time will cost a total of five mana, and then seven, and so on. Since you can cast any side of a modal double-faced card (MDFC), you can cast Extus as Awaken the Blood Avatar and technically have a sorcery in your command zone.

You can only use cards in their mana colour identity; so, if you’ve got a card that is Red and White, then you can only use Red, White and Colourless cards. You can’t have more than one of any card that isn’t a basic land, which makes the variables much more volatile. At this point, I’m convinced that every single playgroup has its very own unique form of mulligan for EDH. To use one of my previous examples, you can play any card that has black or blue in its color identity if you’re playing Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow as your commander.

In this casual, multiplayer format, you choose a legendary creature to serve as your commander and build the rest of your deck around their color identity and unique abilities. Players are only allowed one of each card in their deck, with the exception of basic lands, but they can use cards from throughout Magic‘s history. Commander has an enormous pool of cards for players to choose from, with almost every MTG card ever released being legal in Commander, except a few on the banned list like Black Lotus. This means players can use all the cards in their collection without having to worry about whether they are Standard-legal. Commander is a format where players construct 100-card decks, with each card (except basic lands) appearing no more than once. The format is primarily played with four players, each with their own deck.

There’s no serious meta-gaming aside commander combos from the ultra-competitive scene and the format allows players to build decks that represent their play styles. The scope of a typical Commander/EDH deck is much broader than that of a Standard deck that usually aims to reach a very narrow goal as efficiently as possible. You deck must include no more than one copy of each card (i.e., it’s singleton). This rule is what helps Commander be such an accessible format for players on a budget as well as what leads to players having unique and creative ways to play. There’s no need to buy four of each on-color fetch or shock land.
